Description:A hundred years ago the neighbourhood was almost entirely rural. Houses were certainly creeping up the hill from Smallbrook Street and Gough Street, and a few nearby thoroughfares had been cut and were partly built up, but the ‘Head’ was breezy upland on which could be seen the once famous windmill and all around were flourishing allotment gardens. By this ‘Head’ we read, ran the important main road from the west – marked on old maps as the Birmingham and Worcester road – a road that had been churned deeply into the soil by centuries of traffic, and we are further told that so high were the banks of this ‘hollow way’ that the top of a wagon load of hay did not reach their level.
