Description:The Soho Mint was built in 1788 by Matthew Boulton and was the first steam powered mint in the world. It was situated in Boulton's garden about 100 yards from the Manufactory.

Matthew Boulton wished to produce the national coinage at once but had to wait a decade before obtaining the contracts he so much desired. By this time the machinery had been re-designed to be powered by a vacuum created by the steam engine. Matthew Boulton's son, Matthew Robinson Boulton, rebuilt the Mint in 1824-6 and it was demolished by M.R. Boulton's son, Matthew Piers Watt Boulton, in the early 1850s. The Mint did form not part of Boulton and Watt.
