Date:1952
Description:Handsworth New Road Secondary Modern Boys School. 'Romeo and Juliet' December 1952. Producer: T.W. Knowles. An exercise book containing a script and notes on this production, with a cast list at the end of the volume. The stated aim of the production was: 'To present an intelligible version of the story for the enjoyment of boys aged 11 to 15 and for their parents; bearing in mind the fact that the average parent will not be a theatregoer and will probably most be unacquainted with the text. a strong narrative line is thus of major importance. The use of an arena will make possible the development of large scale movements to suitable music which will heighten the emotional effect at key points and cover any defects in emotional speaking caused through the youthfulness of the players.' The music chosen was Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet, and costumes were to be in 16th century Venetian style.
