Description:"Born Max Smith, his initial job was cleaning out irrigation ditches on a sugar plantation. He soon turned to music and co-founded the short lived vocal trio 'Emotions'. As a solo artist he is best known for classic reggae songs like ' Open The Gate', 'Three Blind Mice' and Maccabee Version', Romeo's biggest selling LP was 'War In A Babylon' in 1976, Island Records. In 1968, Romeo had a British No 1 hit with 'Wet Dream' although BBC Radio banned it due to rude lyrics, it stayed on the charts for an astonishing 26 weeks. In the late 1960's, Romeo played to a packed audience at the Crown and Cushion public house in Perry Barr, Birmingham. In 1981 his 'Holding Out My Love To You' LP was co-produced by Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richard. Romeo continues to tour and record, fans cite the 1999 LP 'Selassie I Forever' as one of his best in recent years." Pogus Caesar, February 2003.
