Description:This gallery was put together to celebrate 150 years of Birmingham's public libraries. The celebrations include a series of free events comprising of talks, family activities and displays at Community Libraries and the Library of Birmingham.
The opening of Constitution Hill District Library on the 3rd April 1861 marked the beginning of a public library service in Birmingham.
Although the first Act of Parliament enabling local authorities to establish public libraries was passed in 1850, it was not until 21st February 1860 that Birmingham adopted the Act.
This gallery showcases some of the libraries that have made up Birmingham's library services over the last 150 years using sources from Archives & Collections.
