Description:Our first fire station was opened in 1878 by the Balsall Heath Local Board of Health although the station consisted of only an engine shed and the eight firemen at that time were volunteers. A huge step forward was the purchase of a steam powered fire engine which needed two horses to pull it.

Our second and much grander station opened at the corner of Highgate Square in 1912 and brand new motorised engines began to work from here.

The building was next occupied by Brittain’s Die Sinkers & Engravers but has now found a new use as BISPA, Birmingham Independent School of Performing Arts.
