Date:May 1908
Description:St Luke's Church Girls Club is seen here in May 1908. At this date St Luke's Church in Bristol Street, had recently risen, if not from the ashes, then from the dust of demolition. The original church had to be demolished and the new one was built from around 1900 to 1903. The vicar at the time of this photograph was the Rev. Wilfred Huntly Neales, L.Th., M.A. It would be unchivalrous to comment on the appearance of the ladies shown here, but perhaps they were out of breath: they are photographed with dumb-bells and Indian clubs, so presumably they have been practising the early 20th-century predecessor of aerobics.
