Description:George Onions won the Victoria Cross in the First World War with the Devonshire Regiment. He managed to take 247 German soldiers prisoner and bring them back to British lines, with the assistance of one other soldier. Onions was born in Bilston in 1883 but lived in Birmingham from circa 1936 till his death in 1944. His last address was at 4 Hagley Court, Hagley Road, Edgbaston. The painting of him shown here was commissioned for the Devonshire Regiment.
