Date:9th of June 1965
Description:The closedown of the shop on Ledsam Street was featured in the local papers because it was so well known for what happened there on 5th April 1883. On that day the owner of the shop, Alfred Whitehead, was arrested on a charge of manufacturing dynamite to be used to blow up government buildings or possibly even the Queen! Other arrests were made, including in London, and all those convicted were given penal servitude for life. The owner in 1965 was a Mr Harold White, running the shop as a newsagents. Amusingly the cutting reports that he had "The old dynamite shop" printed on the top of his invoices.
