Description:This leaflet was part of the campaign ephemera produced for Alfred Bowkett. Bowkett grew up in Ladywood; his first school was Clark Street and he remained in business in the area with his own firm of tube manufacturers on Clement Street. He rose through the ranks of the Birmingham Liberal party and was chosen to be the party's candidate for Edgbaston at the 1923 General Election. He stood against the Unionist Sir Francis Lowe in Edgbaston who retained the seat. In 1924 he was the third candidate in Ladywood, standing against the sitting MP Neville Chamberlain and the Labour candidate who was Oswald Mosley. Bowkett lost his deposit but tried again for parliament when he contested Kingswinford in 1929, also unsuccessfully. He remained a prominent Birmingham Liberal but died unexpectedly aged 51 on 1st March 1934. He is buried in St Peters, Harborne.
