Description:Samuel Cawthorne set up shop as a hatter at 198 Sherlock Street in 1914 and later, as this advertisement shows, extended his range to cover most items of men's clothing. If the advertisement is to be taken literally and he had been in business for a quarter of a century then it must date from the eve of World War II. During the war he left these premises, which were between Macdonald Street and Gooch Street, and moved to Vicarage Road in Kings Heath. The brand names that we know today will no doubt seem as mystifying to our descendants as the names in this advertisement do to us now.
