Description:In the 1950s the Calthorpe estate commissioned their own plan for future development from local architect John Madin, probably the first such town-planning framework to be commissioned by a private urban estate. It was published in 1958 and Madin's plans were adopted at once. The Chamber of Commerce building with its modernistic walls of glass was erected in 1960 in Harborne Road, Edgbaston, at the junction with Highfield Road, and was built to Madin's own design. This involved an eight-storey office block linked by a bridge to a four-storey extension, the whole forming a T-shaped block.
