Date:June 2005

Description:The last (or first) few metres of the Birmingham and Wolverhampton Canal are seen here as it passes under Broad Street and heads for the Gas Street basin. Late 20th-century redevelopment, including the International Convention Centre and the Brindleyplace scheme, have transformed this area and turned the canal into a focal point. This spot was where the Unitarian Church of the Messiah had once stood, built over the canal on a concrete bridge. Meanwhile, at street level, bars, restaurants and what loosely be termed places of entertainment proliferate.
