Description:The Midland Red bus in this city centre scene is turning into Hill Street, Birmingham, and heading towards Victoria Square. Navigation Street crosses from left to right. To the left is the premises of Chetwyn's, who were tailors, while in the background is one of several tobacco kiosks in the city centre run by Finlay & Co. The policeman on point duty was a familiar sight in those days, which would seem to be the late 1940s, to judge by the cars and the presence of the tramlines. More subtly, a pedestrian crossing is in evidence marked by a Belisha beacon on the pavement and dotted lines on the road, but without the zebra stripes that were a later addition. In the distance the Council House clock tower can just be made out, and in front of it a bridge over Hill Street. This presumably linked the General Post Office, on the right at the top of Hill Street, with the Parcels Department, which at that time was on the corner of Hill Street and Paradise Street.
