Description:This portrait of the Rev. James Percy Wilkinson, Vicar of St Luke's, Lee Bank, was taken in 1930. He was instituted as vicar of St Luke's in Bristol Street on 22 September in the same year. While there he arranged the erection of a new building for the day school and the purchase of a vicarage. Born in 1892 at Wrecclesham, Surrey, he was ordained as a deacon in 1915 and St Luke's was his first parish as vicar. In 1936 he became the vicar of St Agnes, Moseley, and stayed there until he retired in 1958 owing to ill-health, by which time he had served the Diocese of Birmingham for 28 years. Among his interests he listed not only music and cricket but also Freemasonry, which might not endear him to some church members and clergy, and his one published work, 'The impact of eschatology upon mid-Victorian literature', was probably not a bestseller.
