Description:When the photograph was taken in around 1980 this cinema in Bristol Street, Lee Bank, was called the Gala Cinema but this was only one of several names it had over the years. The original building having been first the Electric Picture House and then the Bristol Street Picture House, it was demolished in 1923 and rebuilt as the Broadway Cinema on the same site on the corner of Wrentham Street. In 1956 it was much altered and began a new life as the Cinephone, specialising in what may euphemistically be called adult films, but closed in 1977. It was only after this that it was revived as the Gala Cinema. After yet another life as the Climax Cinema the screen went dark for the last time in 1984.
