Description:Nos. 137 to 143 Bristol Street in a photograph dating from the 1950s. These shops were on the west side of Bristol Street, the city centre therefore being to the right. On the left, at no. 143, was Mrs Hilda Cottrell's newsagent's shop. Next to it at no. 141 is the premises of Harold Spooner Ltd, electrical contractors, folowed by the Yeung Shing restaurant at no. 139. The latter only appears in directories from 1958, which helps to date the scene more accurately. The splendid mock medieval building at no. 137 is, somewhat improbably, the YMCA. All, needless to say, disappeared in the course of 1960s redevelopment.
