Date:4th of July 1964

Description:The premises of F.W. Wilkes, greengrocers, of 118/119 Great Colmore Street, Lee Bank, are seen here in a photograph taken on 4 July 1964. The shop was on the north side of the street, at the junction with Pigott Street. Frederick William Wilkes first appears in Birmingham directories in 1901 with a shop at 123 Great Colmore Street, and soon afterwards is included as a fried fish dealer as well, using a separate shop at number 103. The fried fish venture seems to have been fairly promptly abandoned but F.W. Wilkes continued as a greengrocer in Great Colmore Street into the 1960s. From 1963 onwards two shops are listed under this name in High Street, Harborne, and Hagley Road, Edgbaston. Presumably this photograph was taken after the shop had moved on, having seen the writing on the wall for the Lee Bank area.
