Date:1957

Description:This view along Bristol Street, looking southwards, is apparently dated 23 February 1957. The vehicles look to be of that date, particularly the Midland Red bus, but it may seem a little odd that the tramlines are still in place for the last tram on the Bristol Road route ran in 1952. On the left, on the corner of St Luke's Road, is the Wycliffe Baptist Church which opened for worship on 26 June 1861 and was said at the time to be the most beautiful Free Church place of worship in the Midlands. Beyond it at 222 Bristol Street are the premises of Smith Bros., dyers and dry cleaners, as their advertisement painted on the wall tells us. Not far beyond is where Lee Bank and Belgrave Middleway now cross the Bristol Road.
