Description:An interior view of old St Luke's Church, Bristol Street. This photograph was taken at the very end of the 19th century, just before the building was demolished to make way for a new St Luke's Church. The view is looking east, towards the altar. This was the home of the 'Angelic Choir', apparently well-known in its time. The vicar, the Rev. W.B. Wilkinson, took the unusual step of forming a choir of ladies in 1887 and kitting them out in white robes and purple velvet caps. They made a great impression nationally, despite male voices being normal in church choirs at this date. There was a feeling in some quarters that the purity of boys' voices was not always matched by their behaviour.
