Description:There were many small factories in the back streets, manufacturing a large variety of products. I started work at 14 years of age in one of these in Cregoe Street. This was Freeman and Ward, which made hospital and laboratory equipment, also brass and copperware. By the time I was 16 I was on piecework, which meant that you got paid for what you did, not for just being there. Our normal working week was 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, also Saturday 8am to 12 midday. At 18 years of age most young men went into the forces to do their national service, this went on long after the war ended in 1945.
