Description:Walter Langley (1852-1922) after his upbringing in Irving Street, and his training at South Kensington School of Art moved to Cornwall and devoted his painting career to scenes of life in Cornish fishing villages. 'But men must work and women must weep, Though storms be sudden and waters deep, And the harbour bar be moaning' was painted in 1882, the year he went to Cornwall, and takes its title from Charles Kingsley's poem 'The three fishers'. Like the majority of his paintings it is a watercolour. It now belongs to Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery.
