Description:the Rev. T D Halstead who came to the Parish from St Paul’s Greenwich. During his incumbency the Church was twice redecorated (1875 and 1883), and in addition a sum of £750 was expended on the Churchyard, which was then in a deplorable condition. For two years (1883 to 1885) considerable correspondence passed between the Town Council, the Overseers and the Churchwardens, as to which body was liable for this expenditure on the Churchyard. It was contended by the Churchwardens that there were 8,000 corpses in the ground, and as the Churchyard had been closed as a Burial Ground, by Order in Council in 1873, it would be manifestly unfair to place the place the burden on the congregation had relatives buried therein. In 1887, the Overseers reluctantly accepted the Claim and paid the major portion (£650) of the expense. On the resignation of Mr Pearce in 1882, after 13 years’ faithful service as Organist, steps were taken to improve the musical portion of the services; and the Hymn Book then in use, “Windle’s Hymns” was replaced by “Church Hymns”. Mr Paul Smith was appointed Organist and Mr Randle, Choirmaster; the former being succeeded by our present Organist, Mr A A Box, in August 1888. It may interest many of our readers to know that in this year a serious effort was made for the Choir to be removed to the body of the Church. On November 25th 1888, the Rev T D Halsted preached his farewell sermon in St Thomas’ being succeeded by the Rev. F S Webster, who was instituted to the Living in February 1889. (text by E.R.Mason)
