Description:the Rev. C T Wilkinson, who laboured to complete the work commenced by his predecessor; and within a very short time the Rev. G S Bull was invited to lay the foundation stone of Immanuel Church, to which a district was assigned, taking off 10,000 inhabitants from St Thomas Parish. Shortly afterwards, an offer of £1,000 was made by Mr George Dixon, the Borough member, for the building of a further Church in St Thomas district. This offer was accepted, and on the site secured by Mr Bull, the church of St Asaph was built at a cost of about £6,000, and was duly consecrated in 1868. Mr Wilkinson then directed his attention to the Schools, which were in such an impoverished condition that the closing of them was contemplated unless the children’s pence could keep them going. He set to work, and with his skill and knowledge soon placed them under Government Inspection; and as a consequence of his good management, they were made practically self-supporting. The next matters he took in hand were the cleaning, lighting and ventilation of the Church, and also extensive repairs to the Organ. He not only accomplished all these important improvements, but also left the church free from debt on his resignation in 1870. (text by E.R.Mason)
