Description:The schools were built in 1831, when they consisted of a two storey building for the Boys’ and Girls’ Departments and a single storey for the Infants, the premises affording accommodation for about 700 children. In 1871 the Infants Department was re-built, and the other Departments remodelled, at a cost of some £1912. Two successive enlargements were carried out in 1892 and 1894 at a cost of £2,479 when the Boys’ and Girls’ Departments were amalgamated into a mixed department under Mr H R Birch. It should be stated that this great work was only accomplished through the generosity of the late Mr John W Lea, who purchased and presented the property and the site, including two houses, No’s 37 and 39 Bath Row. In 1907 further accommodation was urgently 4required and additional buildings were erected in Chequers Walk at a cost of £2,900 the requisite site being the gift of the same generous friend.

It is interesting to note that the number of scholars on the books in 1890 was 861 when the late Headmaster, Mr H R Birch, was appointed. During the 25 years in which he laboured so faithfully, devoting every atom of energy to the schools and children he loved so dearly, the number increased steadily year by year. Mention must also be made of the splendid services rendered by the Headmistress of the Infants Department, Miss S P Monteith, who was equally devoted to the children, and whose services, extending over a very long period, will never be forgotten.
