The area was eight years into a massive programme of demolition and redevelopment when this photograph was taken on 26 July 1960. Grassy open spaces formed part of the plan for the new Lee Bank. Wholesale demolition of 19th-century housing and industrial premises was due to reduce the population of the area by more than a half.
