Description:When Auntie Emily and Uncle Jack moved to the flat over the barber’s shop in Rickman Drive, the block was brand new. From left to right, facing the shops, there was an off-licence – I can’t remember who ran it when it first opened, but later it was run by Mrs Eggerton, who lived in the flat above with her husband and son Dave; they were Emily and jack’s next door neighbours and, like all the other people who lived up there, were very good neighbours indeed. After the off-licence came Norman the Barber. Next was a ladies’ hairdresser called Dorice. Then the butcher, a grocer, a greengrocer and a newsagents’ shop, on the Great Colmore Street corner, called Darrow’s. Mr Darrow (always referred to by my family as “Frankie Darra”) was actually called Mr Gottlieb, I believe, and he and his wife Nancy had run a newsagent/ sweet shop in Cregoe Street before moving to Rickman Drive. They lived in the flats opposite the shop, and I recall they had a son.
