Date:18th of December 1901
Description:Postcard illustrating the scene outside the Town Hall, Birmingham, after the infamous 'Lloyd George meeting' on 18th December 1901. Although all appears to be peaceful enough there had been chaos when Lloyd George, known for his pro-Boer views, was due to speak at a Liberal rally at the Town Hall. Birmingham's allegiance was to Joseph Chamberlain, the Colonial Secretary during the South African War, and amid scenes of mayhem Lloyd George was prevented from speaking. Indeed, he was in danger of losing his life and was obliged to escape disguised as a policeman. In the course of the riot a mob tried to storm the Town Hall and one man was killed.
