Description:An air-raid shelter on sale at Parker, Winder & Achurch Ltd. in Broad Street, Birmingham. This is an Anderson shelter, made of corrugated iron and meant to be erected in a hole with plenty of earth all over it. It cost £4, a small price to pay for a structure that would protect you from Hitler's bombs and serve as a garden shed in the post-war years. Parker, Winder & Achurch were manufacturers and retailers of all sorts of home hardware, fireplaces, sanitary ware, etc and were at 251 Broad Street, on the corner of Berkley Street. They also had premises round the corner in Gas Street and Granville Street. This appears to be a photograph taken through their shop window, and also features firefighting apparatus: a stirrup pump is propped against the shelter by the door.
