Joseph Sturge (1793-1859) was a Quaker businessman active in the temperance and anti-slavery movements. To the left of the statue is the Five Ways clock tower, with a tram discernible in the distance. To the right is the Lloyds Bank building, designed by Philip Chatwin and built in 1908/09.
