Date:1950 - 1955 (c.)

Description:A scene in Bristol Street, Lee Bank, forming part of a collection of photographs taken in the Lee Bank area not long before demolition and redevelopment in the 1950s and 1960s. This one was probably taken in the early 1950s, when the cars seen here were a familiar sight on the roads. The name on the van may provide a clue to the location, for Victor Spencer Ltd are listed in directories (as 'chemists' sundriesmen') at 28 & 30 Bristol Street, on the east side midway between Essex Street and Bromsgrove Street. The buildings here, though, would appear to be on the west side of Bristol Street. Victor Spencer Ltd had disappeared by 1957, which helps to date the photograph.
