Description:The school was opened on January 3rd 1876 as St Catherine's Boys' School. The infants had already occupied part of the building the year before that. The school became mixed but space proved a problem trying to accomodate all the children.

A new site was purchased where an old factory had stood between Bow Street and Windmill Street. The cost of the land in 1918 was £750. The new school was eventually opened in November 1932 with 450 children. At this point the school was reorganised and the infants remained on the Windmill Street site.

The urban renewal scheme which saw the demolition of many buildings in the horsefair area meant the school had to relocate again. The new St Catherine's School was opened on Great Colmore Street where it stands to this day. The foundation stone from the old school was salvaged and can be found on the site of the new school.

This picture of the original school was taken in 1956 as Public Works prepared the way for urban renewal. Windmill Street runs behind Clydesdale Tower.
