Date:1860 - 1868 (c.)
Description:This is a very early photograph of Soho House, the former home of Matthew Boulton. The roof still has its original 'patent' slating in place. This was a method of laying slates with no overlap, the join being covered by a slate fillet, hence the distinctive lines visible on the roof. It was never very satisfactory and was completely replaced in 1868 when James Wilson and Co were paid the sum of £410 15s 1d for work to the roof. Wilson, a local builder went on to rent Soho House from 1872 until the early 1890s. He also built many of the houses on Park Avenue, Vicarage Road and Soho Hill. At the time of this photograph Soho House was rented by The Reverend George Boyle, the Curate (and later Vicar) of St Michael's Church which had been built nearby in 1853-5. The 1861 census shows the house occupied by Reverend Boyle, his wife, two visitors, nine servants and a Coachman and his family living in the stable block.
