Description:"Born St Kitts, West Indies. Caryl Phillips has written for cinema, television and radio. His literature deals mainly with colonial history. Books include 'The Final Passage' (1984), 'The Nature of Blood' (1997). During the 80's Phillips worked for Central TV, filming in Handsworth, Birmingham and Birmingham, Alabama, on a film connecting the experience of blacks in both cities. He was nominated for the 1993 Booker Prize and has won a Guggenhiem Fellowship and the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize. Caryl Phillips has recently been the subject of a special edition of the TV programme ' The South Bank Show'." Pogus Caesar, February 2003
