Description:"Alton Ellis, originally a dancer, started singing in the 1950s, his unique vocal style was influenced by the black churches. Over the past 25 years he performed many times at the Santa Rosa / Rialto club, and other venues in Handsworth. He was part of a duo with Eddy Perkins and recorded the song 'Muriel' in 1959. Ellis has worked with various Jamaican producers, but it is his recordings for Duke Reid and Coxsone Dodd which has cemented his reputation worldwide. Musicologists claim that his LP,'Sunday Coming', for Studio One as one of his greatest works, featuring heart rending classics like 'Breaking Up' and 'Sitting In The Park' . Other songs such as 'Rock Steady', 'True Born African' 'I'm Just A Guy' and 'Too Late to Turn Back Now' have solidified his status as a truly gifted singer and songwriter."
