Description:Memorandum of a receipt (recipe) for cleaning boot tops. The note is adressed to Robinson Boulton Esquire. Matthew Robinson Boulton, the son of Matthew Boulton the industrialist and entrepreneur was often known as Robinson Boulton to avoid confusion with his father.

The recipe called for powdered allum powdered, white oil of vitriol and the juice of a lemon mixed together in skimmed milk. The liquid was mixed with powdered brick and applied to the boots with a brush. They were left to dry and then brushed with a plush brush which had more of the liquid applied. The writer suggests that the boots will then be smooth and clean. If you wanted them polished as well you needed to brush them with a polishing brush before they were dry.

We suggest you don't try this one at home - it's unlikely to be good for you or your boots!
