Date:13th of June 1945

Description:Barbara Lewis was the Liberal candidate for Handsworth in the 1945 General Election. Her chances were slim as she was up against a large Conservative majority vote, buoyed it was thought by the end of World War Two. One popular slogan was to let Winston Churchill and the Conservatives "finish the job" and plan the peace. The other main candidate was Norman Tiptaft, an independent councillor since 1919 for Handsworth.

At this time politicians would make a series of rallies and talks in the constituencies. The opportunity to reach the people via television and radio was still in its infancy and so it was felt that face to face encounters were the most reliable method of courting voters.
