Description:This is the paper wrapper for a medal which came from the collection of James Watt junior.
The medal (available elsewhere in this site) commemorated the marriage of the Prince of Wales (later George IV) to Pincess Caroline of Brunswick and was produced by Matthew Boulton at the Soho Mint.
The obverse shows the Prince and Princess. The reverse shows Hymen, the Greek god of the marriage ceremony with a flaming torch and the shields of Great Britain and Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. There is a view of London in the background. It reads "Hymen has joined them both in illustrious marriage. The Royal marriage, London, 1797." The date on the medal is incorrect, it should read 1795.
The die with which this medal was struck was produced by Conrad Heinrich Kuchler who was the main designer and engraver for Soho medals from 1793 until his death in 1810. Originally from Germany he initially worked for Boulton from London before moving to Soho in 1795. He is buried at St Mary's, Handsworth.
