Cleopatra Candlevases by Boulton and Fothergill

Description:This pair of candlevases was made by Boulton and Fothergill at the Soho Manufactory around 1771. They are made of blue john with ormolu mounts. The panels in the base are glass painted to look like aventurine.

Candlevases of a similar design are shown in Boulton's pattern books on page 171 of Pattern Book 1. Various designs were available costing from £5.10.0 upwards.

Purchased with the assistance of the National Art Collection Fund, the Heritage Lottery Fund and Birmingham City Council.
