Description:This portrait of industrialist and entrepreneur Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) in his court dress was painted by the artist JSC Schaak when Boulton was aged 42. A bill for two portraits by Schaak survives in the Archives of Soho at Birmingham Central Library. It is likely that the other portrait was of Boulton's business partner at the time John Fothergill as a portrait of Fothergill attributed to Schaak survives in a private collection.

The portrait hangs at Soho House Museum, Boulton's former home. It was purchased with assistance from the V&A Purchase Grant Fund and the Art Fund.
