Description:This ormolu and blue john perfume burner was made by Boulton and Fothergill at the Soho Manufactory.

Perfume burners or cassolettes became fashionable during the eighteenth century and were used to burn incense or pastilles. These produced perfumes which were used to mask unpleasant smells. Perfume burners generally had pierced lids to allow the aroma to escape, this one also has a gilt copper lining. Decorative versions such as this would often have been used in dining rooms.

Purchased with help from the Evans Stamp bequest fund, this example is on display at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
