Description:St Mary's is Handsworth Parish Church and has been much altered and added to over the years. The lower part of the tower is the oldest part of the building and dates to the twelfth or thirteenth century. The first major alterations were carried out in 1820 by William Hollins and the Watt chapel designed by Thomas Rickman was added in 1826. A further enlargement and rebuilding took place in 1876-80 designed by J.A. Chatwin.

This watercolour by C. F. Green shows the church before the Chatwin alterations. It was given to Handsworth Historical Society by Miss Wakelin in 1954.
