Description:This is a test striking for a Gas Institute commemorative medal and is uniface (that is struck only on one side). It shows Perkin, Bunsen, Malam and Clegg below a gasometer.
The actual medal was awarded by the Gas Institute for originality in connection with the manufacture and application of coal gas, and probably dates from the latter part of the 19th century.
William Murdoch, the father of gas innovation, was depicted on the obverse and a uniface striking of this is also on this website. Murdoch worked for Boulton and Watt at Soho and lived at Sycamore Hill House.
