Description:This is a test striking for a Gas Institute commemorative medal and is uniface (that is struck only on one side). It shows William Murdoch, the father of gas innovation. Murdoch worked for Boulton and Watt at Soho and lived at Sycamore Hill House.
The actual medal was awarded by the Gas Institute for originality in connection with the manufacture and application of coal gas, and probably dates from the latter part of the 19th century.
The reverse showed Perkin, Bunsen, Malam and Clegg below a gasometer and is also available on this website.
