Date:1959

Description:In 1959 in Wellington Road a Romano-British kiln was found and excavated. The remains of the kiln included tapered clay fire-bars, pieces of the floor, possible fragments of kiln walling, flat stone 'rubbers' used in manufacture and several hundredweights of sherds. The kiln appears to be a
western extension of the Central Midlands Roman industrial area, and produced pottery of 2 types ranging from the late 1st to the late 2nd century AD.
The late 1st and early 2nd century types are not kiln products but indicate earlier occupation of the site. The kiln products were
tankards and bowls in a buff fabric and greyware jars. Hollows in the natural clay underlying the kiln debris may be the result of clay extraction. There were also roughly cobbled surfaces. Evaluation suggested that any
Romano-British activity at the site was destroyed by ground disturbance in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Some of the pottery is now in the care of the Handsworth Historical Society who provided the photograph used here.
