WHY WRITE A BOOK?

Sadly apart from the information already done I have not seen a book written by someone who is ‘home – grown’, born and grown up in the area.

I, like so many, can recall things that used to be here, that no longer exist. They are missed yet our children never learn about such things.
I have written this book for them to learn about the History of the environment in which their parents, were bought up in, and to have an idea about their parents, grandparents, culture, values, ideology of life and identity. For them to appreciate the richness of their community, and the wealth of experiences which we so often neglect to discuss with them.

For example: Did you know Handsworth once had 6 cinemas? Where are they now?

It raises the question what do you come to Handsworth to do?
Many people come to visit others, come to study, shop, and use the leisure facilities.

What benefit is it that there are so many cultures?
What did it used to be like?
What are the predictions for the future?
With the cultural changes it has meant new organizations developing to cater for the needs of the growing community. This has meant a change in the retail shops, which is so prominently portrayed in the shops we have in the area of Handsworth. This has included new houses, parks and play areas medical centers, training centers, schools, also new road layouts.

Lastly when we look at the beauty of some things we realize that moment in time will soon be gone and we are never able to capture those scenes again- they are now History, every second, every minute gone, it’s now behind us. Throughout my book many of the scenes will be forgotten in generations to come. I have captured some that I will always cherish. The quality of the photos will also make you remember some of the things you read about.

I hope you enjoy this website and learn lots of interesting facts about Handsworth.
