Description:This gallery shows Matthew Boulton Pattern Book 2, one of a series containing designs for silver, ormolu and plated ware produced by Boulton and Fothergill, M. Boulton and M. Boulton & Plate Co. At some point in the mid to late nineteenth century these pattern books were acquired by the firm of Elkington & Co who were silversmiths and electroplaters. Elkingtons cut up and rearranged the pattern books and appear to have reduced the number of books from nine to eight.

When the volumes were acquired by Birmingham Central Library they were initially added to the Boulton and Watt Collection where this was referenced as Pattern Book 2, Boulton and Watt Collection 170. As part of the HLF funded Archives of Soho conservation and cataloguing project the volumes were transferred to the Matthew Boulton Papers where they sit more logically. The new reference number is MS3782/21/3. Please note that the page numbers in this pattern book are not consecutive, a missing number does not mean there is a missing page.

This is page 1 which shows designs for silver plated ware: an epergne (pattern no. 1809), and; candelabrum detail (pattern no. 1810). Use the zoomify function to look at the designs in greater detail.

This volume is part of the Archives of Soho collection, that is held by Birmingham City Archives [Ref: MS3782]
