Description:Reverse general section of 'sun & planet' engine for George & James Robinson, Cotton Mill, Papplewick, Nottinghamshire.

George and James Robinson were father and son, and were the first cotton spinners to have a Boulton & Watt engine powering their mill. The engine was an 11 horse power sun & planet engine, with a 17½ inch cylinder and a 4 foot stroke. Note that the section of the engine shows the position of the water wheel which had previously powered the mill, and that the elevation of the mill has the new engine house pencilled on. Ownership of the Papplewick mill and engine had passed to James’ brother John by 1797.
