Description:St Augustine's Roman Catholic Church was opened on July 28th 1939. The first priest was Father Moore. It had seating for 400 parishioners and has a 70ft high tower which features a statue of St Augustine as apostle of England. The church was built by J.W. Malley Ltd to a design by G.B. Cox. The cost was £8,500. During World War Two it was hit by a bomb which lodged in the church roof, luckily the bomb failed to detonate.
