Description:William McGregor is the man credited with the idea of forming the Football League. Prior to 1888, the only competitive matches played by clubs were in the FA Cup. Once knocked out of the FA Cup, clubs only had friendly matches to look forward to. With the Football League, clubs were guaranteed a fixed number of competitive matches over the course of the season. William McGregor, whose club, Aston Villa, were one of the 12 founder members, became the first President of the Football League. His gravestone inscription reads: "In Loving Memory. Jessie the beloved wife of William McGregor, who died December 13th 1908 aged 60 years. Peace Perfect Peace. Also William McGregor, beloved husband of the above, who died December 20th 1911, aged 65 years. Thy Will Be Done.
